Gazprom Gaffs Catapult Rosneft into Gas Sales Race

The past week - or past year, for that matter - has gone extremely badly for Russia's state gas champion Gazprom, and extremely well for state-run oil giant Rosneft. As the dust settles, it looks as if Rosneft has already displaced Gazprom as the best positioned future supplier of Russian gas to China - and a possible future intruder even in Gazprom's core European markets. While LNG is the only mode of overseas gas delivery likely to open up to Rosneft in the foreseeable future, its activities could undercut Gazprom's already lagging pipeline gas sales efforts, as well.
