With the Falkland Islands expecting first oil from its offshore Sea Lion project in 2018, the government of the UK-controlled archipelago hopes to use its impending oil wealth to improve commercial links with nearby South American countries. In the past, Latin American nations have at least pretended to support Argentinean efforts to isolate the islands, over which Buenos Aires has long held a territorial claim. Yet the Latin American boycott of the Falklands has never been complete, and signs are emerging that new business opportunities associated with oil may sway at least some nearby countries to upgrade their ties to the islands.
