Phelps Dodge Corp. rang the closing bell for the New York Stock Exchange on May 24 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of its listing on the exchange. Phelps Dodge's senior management team took part in the ceremony, along with three veteran Phelps Dodge employees from the company's copper mine in Morenci, Arizona-repair supervisor Terry Mills, field electrician apprentice Manuel Aguirre and senior accounting supervisor Kim Henry. At year-end 1929-the year Phelps Dodge listed on the exchange-846 companies were on the NYSE. Today there are 2,760 listed companies, but only 86 of those have an original listing date earlier than May 1929, the month that Phelps Dodge joined the exchange. Phelps Dodge also is one of only 71 companies that have been on the Fortune 500 each year since the magazine began publishing its list 50 years ago.
