SMEC (Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation) was originally a spin-off from the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority which was responsible for the desigr and construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. SMEC was established in 1970 1o retain and app the technical and management, skills developed for the scheme. SMEC WE corporatised in 1988 and privatised b sale to the staff in 1393. SMEC was again at the forefront of the renewable energy sector recently when it assisted Lihir Gold in the registration of its geothermal power plant in Papua New Guinea under the Clean Development Mechanism (COM) of the Kyoto Protocol. This permits the company to generate carbon credits worth around 3 million US dollars a year on the global carbon trading market. This the first COM project in Papua New Guinea and one of only 200 in the world.
