A mptec has recently won major contracts for the supply of both conventional oil-cooled transformers, now imported with zero duty (under the FTA) from Ekarat of Thailand and also for ANAN air-cooled transformers, with encapsulated cast resin coils, made by low-cost Chinese manufacturer Sunten. As engineers and developers become aware of the significance of air-cooling, with its total absence of oil and costly bunding, so the demand for Sunten's products in Australia is growing. As well as special three winding, 12 pulse, transformers for the supply of variable speed drive motors recently installed around Western Sydney as part of the Sewer-Fix program, transformers have been sold to the Brown Mountain hydro scheme and to other renewable energy projects such as the Cathedral Rocks wind farm in South Australia. A recent first has been the development of an IP65 enclosure, using filters and forced fan cooling, for a SOOKVA transformer being installed by Comalco at Weipa in northern Queensland, where it operates under very wet and very dusty conditions.
