A quick analysis of the balance sheets of typical Australian electricity transmission and distribution network businesses tells us for each electricity customer there is about $11,000 of transformers, switchgear, poles, wires and underground cables, with a replacement value of approximately $16,000. This investment on a per customer basis represents about half the value of the family car. Electricity regulators understand network owners need a revenue stream to cover the maintenance and the progressive replacement of these assets. This becomes a large part of our electricity bills.
