Two carbon storage projects have emerged as significant players in capture and storage development. Western Australian greenfield saline formation storage project Southwest Hub completed a successful drilling program in March, while Victoria's CarbonNet project received Federal Government approval earlier this year. South West Hub CCS project and Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) coordinator carbon strategy Dominique Van Gent said the project's modelling is aimed at new power plant builds, but retrofits through the research were possible. Following saline formation test results, the project is proceeding with planning a 3D seismic survey. "We are getting into a saline formation and we've very keen on determining the trapping mechanism in a saline formation," Mr Van Gent told Energy Source & Distribution.
