The development of strategies for the operation of SCADA alarm systems is important in ensuring SCADA systems operate effectively. Sufficient attention is often not given to this area in the early stages of SCADA system design and development, resulting in a cluttered, ineffective alarm system. Alarm system problems usually have common symptoms that include high alarm activity, a high number of standing alarms, a number of repeating/fleeting alarms, non-actionable or nuisance alarms and alarm bursts that produce operator overload during plant upsets.
