Summer in Australia provides a clear example of the nation's ever-increasing demand for electricity and the complexity of managing peak demand. The use of domestic air-conditioners often leads to short-term peaks in demand -typically during daylight hours, but also continuing into the late evening. The debate over which combination of energy sources - such as coal, natural gas, wind, nuclear and solar - is best suited to accommodate this escalating demand for electricity during both base-load and peak periods has never been more pertinent. At a recent Australian Engineering Network (AUSEN) information and networking evening, two energy industry experts shed new light on Australia's electricity generation challenge, providing insights into both demand and generation issues.
