Coker outages likely to extend supply shortage

A supply squeeze in petroleum coke tightened over the past week with unplanned disruptions at a number of US cokers. A coker fire at LyondellBasell’s Houston refinery and a ruptured tube on a coker heater at Citgo’s Corpus Christi refinery seem likely to cut coke production at these facilities for some time. Phillips 66’s Wood River refinery in Illinois was starting to return to normal rates this week after a disruption in its heavy crude supply from a pipeline shutdown, but the week-long disruption could worsen a lack of spot supply that has refiners sold out until June or later.
