BMA coking coal strike threat grows

UK-Australian resources firm BHP Billiton is facing a potential industrial dispute at its coking coal mines in Queensland, as Australian unions prepare to fight to protect worker pay and beneifts in the face of weaker coal prices. The Construction Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) plans to take on BHP Billiton at its BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) mines after the firm sought to cut benefits won in 2012. BHP Billiton said that the changes are necessary to improve productivity and reduce the wage bill.
