China’s steel overcapacity will not be removed by market forces alone but will require active intervention by Beijing, government officials said, in an attempt to reassure the global industry that the country is serious about cutting capacity. Overcapacity in China’s steel industry is threatening to become a major issue at the G20 heads of states summit in Zhejiang next month, when US and EU officials may press Beijing to increase measures to remove capacity.
