Delhi orders Coal India to reserve coal for power

The Indian government has ordered state-controlled mining company Coal India (CIL) to reserve more than one-fifth of its auctioned product for power plants, in a move that could dampen the company’s revenues in the coming year. CIL must conduct an online auction specifically for the power sector in this fiscal year, selling 10mn t or around 22pc of the total volumes it earmarks for auction, coal and power minister Piyush Goyal said. The move aims to enhance supply security for power plants without purchase agreements with CIL, or those for which supply agreements fall short.
