Canada enacts strict new crude-by-rail rules

Canada will require older-model tank cars to be phased out or retrofitted and mandate slower speeds on trains carrying crude and ethanol, issuing the most stringent new crude-by-rail rules since last year’s deadly Lac Megantic, Quebec, accident. Older model tank cars must be phased out or refitted within three years, removing from market the car type involved in the Quebec accident, according to new rules from Transport Canada.
