Two metres long and almost one metre high - how hard can it be to find an aardvark? It took BBC producer Amanda Barrett more than six years to spy her first, and only a minute to be fascinated by the elusive termite'hoover'. In the cartoons and storybooks of my childhood, aardvarks were improbable beings that belonged in the same league as Mole, Ratty and Pooh. Today, after many nightly assignations with the species under the African stars, aardvarks are still the most fantastical animals I've ever met.
