Glencore to close Newlands coal mine

Switzerland-based mining and trading firm Glencore will close its 2.75mn t/yr Newlands Northern thermal coal mine in Queensland, Australia, this quarter. Glencore had planned to close the mine when it reached the end of its life in the October-December quarter, but the final longwall took longer than expected to extract. Development activity stopped in mid-2015 after the final longwall panel was set up. The closure of Newlands North leaves just the open-cut mine at the Newlands complex. Newlands produced 6.97mn t of thermal and semi-soft coking coal in 2014.
