European coal prices recovered much of their recent losses over the past week, following a rally in crude oil futures and an active fob Richards Bay (RB) physical market. The cif Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) daily index climbed to $45.83/t on 23 February from $41.81/t on 18 February, before slipping back to $45.01/t today. Yesterday’s level had not been seen since 11 January. Coal prices in South Africa have been rising more slowly, but are still up by more than $5/t from mid-January at $53.64/t.
