Russian coal exports rise in July

Rail shipments of Russian coal for export increased by 5pc on the year to 14.8mn t in July, on strong demand in Asia-Pacific. Deliveries to Russia’s far eastern ports increased by 938,000t to nearly 7mn t over the same period. Increased orders from Chinese coastal power plants likely boosted imports of Russian coal. China raised its imports of Russian thermal coal by 246,100t and 674,000t on the year in May and June, respectively. Coal burn at China’s major coastal utilities rose sharply because of a July heatwave, which led to a year-onyear rise in imports of coal from across the region for the first time in 23 months in May.
