Capesize scrapping reaches 64 ships

Dry bulk scrapping reached record rates in the frst 20 weeks of the year through 20 May, with 64 Capesize vessels total- ling 10.7mn deadweight tonnes (dwt) scrapped, according to shipbrokers. Only 8.8mn dwt of Capesizes and very large ore carri- ers (VLOCs — more than 300,000dwt) were scrapped in the frst fve months of last year, according to shipbroker Howe Robinson, while 14.3mn dwt was demolished in the entire year. The frst half of 2015 held the previous record for the highest number of ships scrapped.
