CRP shutdown highlights frail infrastructure

Back-to-back power cuts that shut down Venezuelan stateowned PdV’s 940,000 b/d CRP refining complex on the Paraguana peninsula and its Bajo Grande terminal expose the broader failings of Venezuela’s power infrastructure. The power cuts started on 1 October, forcing the 635,000 b/d Amuay and 305,000 b/d Cardon refineries that make up CRP to stop processing crude. Power has been restored at the complex, but restarting the refineries’ crude units is expected to take until 8-10 October.
