First-time fall in energy consumption

For the first time, grid manager Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has predicted a fall in Australian energy use. A report released at the end of June forecasts reduced energy use across eastern and south-eastern Australia, which will slow the need for new energy infrastructure and could save billions on transmission networks. AEMO says the 2.4 per cent drop in annual energy usage is due to lower industrial energy consumption, the growth of rooftop solar panels, comparatively mild weather and the consumer respanse to rising electricity prices. AEMO managing director and CEO Matt Zema said electricity use has not dropped this much since the National Electricity Market (NEM) first commenced.
