US government officials foresee a shift away from fossil fuels in power generation and transportation despite low oil and natural gas prices. IEA executive director Fatih Birol told the IHS CeraWeek conference in Houston on 22 February that low fossil fuel prices may limit renewable energy growth. US energy secretary Ernest Moniz countered that “we have not seen a slowdown in the introduction of wind and solar energy” after two years of low natural gas prices. “The price of solar and wind also has gone down” as a result of technological progress, he said.
