GWF closes five coke-fired plants

Merchant power producer GWF Power Systems began shutting down its five San Francisco area petroleum coke- fired plants on the evening of 16 February, after receiving final approval for the closures from state utility officials the same day. California’s Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved GWF’s proposal to shut the 20MW plants – two in Pittsburg, two in Antioch and one in Bay Point. The last of the daily petroleum coke deliveries was received on 15 February. GWF has been slowly letting its petroleum coke inventory drop, and took only enough coke to be able to operate through 16 February.
