Egypt pays $1.5bn in energy debts

Egypt has paid back a $1.5bn tranche of the debt it owes to foreign energy firms, the petroleum ministry said on 2 October. The figure is higher than the $1bn that petroleum minister Sherif Ismail said Egypt was planning to repay by the end of September and brings down to $4.9bn Egypt’s total overdue debts to foreign energy companies.
