US petroleum coke production rose by about 2pc on the year in October, a relatively minor increase considering that new cokers have come on line. Year-to-date through October, US refineries produced about 35mn t of marketable coke, according to the US Energy Information Administration. This is only 3.3pc more than they produced in the same period a year earlier, despite a new 28,000 b/d coker that started up at Marathon’s 120,000 b/d Detroit refinery in November 2012 and a 90,000 b/d coking unit at Motiva’s 600,000 b/d Port Arthur, Texas, refinery that reached planned rates in March 2013.
