Wildlife groups have welcomed the news that the London Olympic Park, the showpiece of the 2012 Olympic Games, is to be given a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) to protect the local environment against development. The Olympic Park will be the biggest urban park built in Europe for 150 years and will house the main stadium, the velodrome, the aquatics centre and three multi-sport arenas. But its location at the lower end of the Lee Valley, one of the UK's richest urban wildlife habitats, with grassland,scrub, canals and riverbanks, has raised concerns about its conservation impact. A London Wildlife Trust reserve, Old Ford Island, lies at the centre of the proposed development. Wildlife here includes black redstarts, grass snakes, kingfishers, reed buntings, rabbits, dragonflies and the nationally scarce Adonis ladybird. Work has already begun on the site, but developers must now work with conservationists to establish how habitats can be best saved and managed.
