Potential threats from terrorism, threats from the environment and threats from unreliable technology is now being considered as the driver for the unmanned surveillance systems. Traditionally, conventional surveillance systems of unmanned sites have been limited to simple automated motion detectors. These systems require constant maintenance, are prone to nuisance alarming and are often in need of onsite calibration. Therefore, the care to ensure year-round operation is expensive and despite remedial works, is often still unreliable.
