Coal is an abundant and relatively low-cost natural resource used around the world to generate electricity. Continuing GE Energy's long tradition of innovation in energy-producing technology, GE have created the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. This technology will play a major role in Australia and large parts of the world including India and China where coal will continue to be a major source of energy. Currently in Australia, coal is used to generate about 86 per cent of the power sent out. Australia also generates in excess of 50 Billion dollars in revenue from coal exports. Therefore, technology to produce energy from coal more efficiently will become necessary if we are to reduce the effects of global warming. IGCC is a proven technology for power generation and carbon capture for future sequestration and is commercially available today.
