Reform of the national energy market will be half-baked if the current web of codes and guidelines is replaced by a single national regulator that covers electricity but neglects gas. Speaking at the recent National Convention of Australia's Pipeline Industry Association, Federal Resources Minister Ian MacfarIane argued for an extension to the idea of a national energy regulator to include gas. "I can't see the sense of keeping the electricity and gas markets under separate regulators. There are 13 regulators for electricity, eight for gas and 17 that cover both markets," Mr MacfarIane said.
