Fifty years ago, the first tankers to deliver bulk liquid gas in New Zealand arrived in Napier, direct from BOC's processing plant at Wellington. In November that year, the first South Island tanker deliveries were made from Lyttleton Port to BOC's compressing station at Sockburn, Christchurch. "Known then as New Zealand Industrial Gases (NZIG), it was the first time our road tankers, affectionately known as 'golf balls' for obvious reasons, had been on the road, and it was a ground-breaking achievement at the time," BOC New Zealand general manager Sue Dale says.
