Illinois river reopens to barge freight

The Illinois river has reopened to barge traffic, leaving the Arkansas river as the only major inland waterway shut-off by high water. Only two of nine locks on the Arkansas river remain closed, but they are located in areas that essentially block barge travel along the waterway. Lock and Dam No. 2 near Tichnor, Arkansas, is positioned near the waterway’s connection with the Mississippi river, so freight barges are unable to move on and off the Arkansas.
