Rainfall during the monsoon season in India is likely to be above average this year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD’s long-range forecast report predicts that seasonal rainfall in June-September is likely to be 106pc of the longperiod average with a model error of 5pc. The long-period average seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole for 1951- 2000 is 89cm. A rainfall range of 96-104pc of the long-period average is considered normal by the IMD, while 90-96pc is deemed to be below average.
