South African coal prices slump as competition grows

South African physical coal prices fell last week, as competition from Colombian cargoes in Asia-Pacific grows. Competitively priced Colombian cargoes booked to Asia- Pacific weighed on South African spot prices. Approximately 4mn t of Colombian thermal coal will head to Asia-Pacific in the first half of this year. Argus assessed the weekly South African fob Richards Bay (RB) index down by $1.68/t at $52.05/t — its lowest weekly assessment since the week beginning 4 April.
