A renewable energy power station was recently completed at Gympie, Queensland, by S.E. Power Equipment. This power station is regarded as a world-first for Macadamia shells to be used as a fuel for power generation. The discarded shells are a waste product from the nut processing plant and are normally a nuisance for transport and disposal as landfill or very slow release compost. The shells are burnt in a high-pressure boiler to produce steam as the motive power for a steam turbine generator. The excess power not consumed by the nut processing plant is available for export to the grid and could be as high as 1.2MW.
