Performing tests on the accuracy of installed populations of electricity meters has traditionally been a daunting and expensive task, requiring complex and often cumbersome testing units and necessitating highly-trained operating staff. Accordingly, the goal of low-cost and rapid on-site meter re-certification has traditionally remained elusive. The recent release of AS/NZS 1294 Chapter 13 has focussed the industry on the task of in-situ testing and on the acquisition of suitable testing equipment. For a period of nearly three years Lord Consulting, a New Zealand-based consulting and test equipment company, has been working alongside its Canadian partner, Consulab, to address the inherent technical challenges in achieving cost-effective, compact, lightweight, and flexible testing equipment that would also offer intuitive and simple operation. With field practicality the key to fast and economic compliance testing, all the foregoing parameters were seen as vital in the design stage.
