The Lake Margaret power station wag closed in 2006 as a result of safety concerns for the existing woodstave pipeline being at risk of failure. Built between 1912 and 1914 and extended in 1930 to its current configuration, the station and surrounds were Heritage Listed in 2007, bringing challenges for the redevelopment. The company had planned to turn the old station into a museum and build a new station alongside it, but community consultation revealed locals wanted the old station to provide power again. Hydro Tasmania chief executive officer, Vince Hawksworth said the output from the powerstation would be a welcome addition to the hydro power system.
