The Unified Modelling Language (UML) is popular with software engineers to the point where it is now the only widely used visual modelling language for software engineering. However, UML's software focus has discouraged many system engineers from adopting it in earnest. In March 2003, the Object Management Group (OMG), realizing the importance of system engineering and its critical role in the early phase of system development, issued a Request for Proposal (RfP) for a customized version of UML suitable for Systems Engineering. The RfP was the work of the Systems Engineering Domain Special Interest Group (SE DSIG). Here's part of the introduction to the RfP.
