Colin Holland looks at the development of a new tool and provides an insight into the technology required for fault-finding in today's and tomorrow's vehicles. As we all know, vehicles are becoming increasingly reliant on electronics to provide better fuel-economy, safety features, performance, passenger entertainment and ever higher levels of reliability. Whilst this is generally good news for vehicle owners, the increased reliance on electronics can, when the cars do develop faults, present significant challenges to garages: particularly in the after market. Long gone are the days of 'popping the bonnet' and looking around for disconnected pipes/leads or water/oil leaks. Now, the 'embedded system on wheels' that is the modern vehicle needs to be connected to an equally sophisticated diagnostic tool.
