Colombia’s thermal coal exports drop in March

Colombia’s thermal coal exports fell to an 11-month low in March as demand from Turkey plummeted. The world’s fourth largest coal-exporting nation shipped 5.64mn t of thermal coal last month, a fall of 27.4pc compared with 7.77mn t in March last year, according to data from shipping agency Deep Blue. This is the lowest level since April 2015, when Colombia shipped 5.63mn t. Exports dropped by 28.2pc from February’s 7.78mn t, which had been inflated by buyers stockpiling coal in anticipation of a strike at Cerrejon. Unions cancelled plans to go on strike on 15 March after accepting a two-year agreement with employers.
