US production of primary aluminium fell by 25pc in January from a year earlier as technical issues reduced the output of one of three remaining domestic smelters. Production of primary aluminium fell to 106,000t from 142,000t a year earlier, as US smelters continued to cut output and Tennessee-based Noranda Aluminum reported a potline failure on 7 January, the US Geological Survey said in its latest report. Canada and Russia were the two greatest exporters of primary aluminium and alloy to the US in January at 219,000t and 52,800t, respectively. Canada and Mexico were the two greatest importers of US primary aluminium and alloys, each taking in 16,000t and 8,590t.
