US coal production could stabilize

US coal production will further decline this year but could stabilize in 2017, Cloud Peak chief executive Colin Marshall said. “We are not thinking that suddenly US coal is going back to a billion tons,” Marshall said. “We are thinking about it coming back down to a stable, sustainable level, somewhere not too far south of where it is this year.” US coal production fell to 896.4mn short tons (813.2mn t) last year from 1bn st in 2014, according to preliminary estimates from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration.
