Worsening mining disruptions are setting up Ukraine to become a net coal importer, halting supplies to buyers like Turkey. Severe political unrest and violence in eastern Ukraine have caused around 80pc of the country’s coal mines to close or halt operations. Less than 30 plants are still producing, but are not operating at capacity, with mining firms adjusting output to cope with intermittent power supplies and risks of violence.
