EU approves Holcim’s Cemex West acquisition

The European Commission has given Switzerland-based cement maker Holcim unconditional clearance for its acquisition of Cemex West in Germany, part of a series of transactions with Mexico-based Cemex separate from Holcim’s proposed merger with France-based Lafarge. Holcim and Cemex are swapping assets in Europe, with local competition authorities in the Czech Republic clearing Cemex’s acquisition of Holcim Cesko in March. The two companies plan to combine their cement, ready-mix concrete and aggregates operations in Spain, a proposal that the European Commission is still reviewing.
