OTTAWA,DENE THA' REACH SETTLEMENT

The federal government has signed a 25-million agreement with the Dene Tha' First Nation of northern Alberta removing a legal challenge which could have delayed the proposed 1.2-billion Mackenzie natural gas project,it was announced in late July by Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Jim Prentice and Dene Tha' Chief James Ahnassay,who represents about 2,500 members on seven reserves in northwestern Alberta,northeastern British Columbia and the southern end of the Northwest Territories.It was ruled in late 2006 that Ottawa failed to consult with the Dene Tha' over the proposed pipeline.
