Minneriya National Park

There are so many Asian elephants to be found in Minneriya in the peak season, you may struggle to remember the spectacular raptors and waterbirds you also see here.Here's an idea for something to do before you die. Take a trip to Sri Lanka in September or even mid-October - no later, because you don't want the north-east monsoon to have started. Go to Minneriya National Park, hire a jeep and head out to the huge tank that is the focal point of the whole park. By this time, right at the end of the dry season, the tank will have vastly reduced in size, and you'll be driving over grassland that is transformed into marsh or lake at the height of the rains. Crucially,for the region's elephants, which alternate between Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks, the tank is the only significant water source at this time of year - and so the elephants gather there in their hundreds.
