Motiva faced a number of challenges in December at its 600,000 b/d refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, where the company has been working on an expansion that will increase petroleum coke production to about 3mn mt/yr. A fire broke out at the refinery’s new 325,000 b/d VP5 crude unit in the late hours of 11 December, although Shell, which jointly operates Motiva with Saudi Aramco, said it was very small, rapidly extinguished and caused no damage.
