Around 1,000 Chinese coal mines could be shut this year as part of a government drive to slash production capacity by 2020. The country’s central energy planning agency, the NEA, aims to close mines with a combined production capacity of 60mn t/yr by the end of this year, NEA head Noor Bekri said. China has reiterated plans to encourage mergers and acquisitions of small coal mines by larger companies and to seek the integration of coal and power generation businesses in an attempt to improve mining firms’ efficiency.
