Australian coal exports from Newcastle slip

Australian coal exports from the Kooragang and Carrington terminals at the port of Newcastle fell sharply in the week ending 1 May. A total of 1.79mn t was exported through the two Port Waratah (PWCS) terminals last week compared with 2.3mn t the previous week, and close to the annual low of 1.15mn t in the week ending 12 January, according to data from Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator. This was matched by a 1.5mn t fall to 1.95mn t in volumes railed to the port from the nearby Hunter Valley coal mines. A total of nine ships sailed from the Kooragang terminal last week, compared with 19 the previous week, and three less than had been planned. The ships sailed seven hours ahead of schedule on average, compared with 3.2 hours behind schedule the previous week.
