Indian ports handle more thermal coal

The amount of thermal coal handled by 12 key state-controlled ports in India during April-August increased by 22.66pc compared with a year earlier to 40.35mn t. The total volume of thermal coal handled by the ports during the period, the first five months of the 2015-16 fiscal year (FY) ending 31 March, equates to a monthly average of 8.07mn t that is lower than a pro-rated monthly average of 8.13mn t for April-July, preliminary data from the Indian Ports Association (IPA) show. The lower volumes are in line with recent data from other sources showing Indian imports slipped during July, mainly because of rising domestic production and high stocks at power plants.
