SP AusNet spokesperson Natasha Whalley said part of SP AusNet's ongoing maintenance program involved washing high voltage powerlines and other electricity infrastructure, which the rainwater tanks will now provide water for. "Pollution can build up on the underneath sections of high voltage powerlines and equipment and it doesn't get washed away by rain, particularly in summer," Ms Whalley said, "To prevent this build-up resulting in unplanned power outages, local crews regularly 'wash' these assets. "The installation of a 30,000 litre rainwater tank at the Hazelwood depot means SP AusNet can now use rainwater to carry out this vital 'washing', rather than using water from the mains supply.
